To study Dentistry in Sweden and attain a DDS (Degree in Dental Surgery) it takes 5 years. There are a total of 4 recognised universities in Sweden to study dentistry. The Swedish name for the degree is ‘ Tandläkarexamen’.

We understand what it takes to become a Swedish dentist, how the Swedish Dental system works, and obviously the British Dental system inside out. We can then marry up the pair and make the transition for European Dentists and Swedish Dentists alike as smooth as possible for those wishing to live and work in the UK.

All Swedish residents will know there is a choice of private or public practice. Similar to the UK’s system of private and NHS practice. In the UK, treatment is free up until the age of 18, whereas in Sweden, treatment is free up until the age of 20.

All dentists from Sweden are free to work in the European Union area and the UK. Likewise dentists from the EU are free to work in Sweden also. If dentists have an exam outside the European Economc Area  then they need to take a one year course at the Karolinska Institute  in Stockholm.

According to official stats,in 2002 there were 6,007 male and 5,108 female dentists under retirement age  registered in Sweden. This translates as 54% & 46% respectively.

The number of dentists in Sweden is decreasing all the time due to a number of factors. Retirement , natural wasteage, reduction in Swedish Government funding and numbers of sponsored undergraduate places. Added to this  more Dentists are leaving Sweden than those arriving in Sweden from other countries. Emigration is overriding immigration for many factors. A number of these reasons are the population is very low in Sweden , and the wages and potential earnings for Dentists in Sweden are very low compared to other countries such as the United Kingdom.
